Wall paintings

During the renovations of St Sylvester’s Church it was discovered that the Church had several 17th or 18th Century wall paintings that had been overpainted. In March 2022 Ruth McNeilage and Carolyn, conservators, came to St Sylvester’s Church for an investigatory session to uncover some of the paintings to establish their size. We have six of these paintings and they are now believed to date from the late 17th or early 18th century.

The text for this wall painting is almost certainly from Jeremiah XIII, verse 23:
Can the Ethiopian change his skin, or the leopard his spots?
then may ye also do good, that are accustomed to do evil

In June 2023 Ruth McNeilage and her conservators returned to work further on the paintings. The initial phase was to uncover three paintings on the north wall of the church.
